LockItVault vs. iCloud, OneDrive, and Google Drive: Our 2026 Cloud Upload Speed Test
A transparent look at how four major cloud platforms performed in one controlled browser-based upload comparison.
Cloud storage is only convenient when files move quickly. Whether you are backing up photographs, transferring business records, preserving important documents, or uploading a large media library, cloud upload speed can determine whether the process takes minutes or hours.
To see how browser-based upload performance compared across several familiar cloud platforms, we conducted a preliminary cloud upload speed test involving LockItVault, iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, and Google Drive.
In this single test, LockItVault recorded the highest measured upload throughput at 43.33 Mbps. That was approximately 20% faster than iCloud, 53% faster than the Microsoft OneDrive environment tested, and 60% faster than Google Drive.

Cloud Upload Speed Test Results
The measured upload throughput for each platform was:
- LockItVault: 43.33 Mbps
- iCloud: 36.10 Mbps
- OneDrive: 28.39 Mbps
- Google Drive: 27.15 Mbps
Within this test, LockItVault’s measured rate was approximately:

Put differently, LockItVault transmitted approximately 43.33 megabits per second during the measured upload period, compared with 27.15 megabits per second for Google Drive.
Again, those percentages describe the results of this particular test—not guaranteed performance under every condition.
How We Conducted the Test
We used the same test file and the same internet connection for every platform. The file was uploaded normally through each platform’s website using Google Chrome.
A custom Chrome extension monitored the network activity generated during each upload. For every platform:
- Network capture began immediately before the upload.
- The file was uploaded through the platform’s ordinary web interface.
- Capture ended after the website reported that the upload was complete.
- The extension recorded the relevant upload requests, timestamps, and transmitted byte counts.
- Background requests unrelated to the file upload were excluded from the calculation.
The extension did not record file contents, cookies, authorization headers, passwords, or other account credentials.
How the Upload Rate Was Calculated
The measured network throughput was calculated using this formula:
Upload rate in Mbps = transmitted bytes × 8 ÷ transfer time ÷ 1,000,000
Bytes are multiplied by eight because files are measured in bytes, while internet connection speeds are normally stated in megabits per second, or Mbps.
Some platforms transmitted the file through one large request. LockItVault divided the upload into multiple consecutive chunks. For the chunked upload, the transmitted bytes were added together and the elapsed time was measured from the start of the first chunk through completion of the final chunk.
The Microsoft capture also contained unrelated telemetry. That traffic was excluded, and only the request associated with the file upload was included in the reported result.
Because this calculation uses transmitted bytes, the figures are best understood as measured network throughput during the upload. Different platforms may transmit different amounts of protocol, encryption, chunking, or metadata overhead. A future expanded benchmark will also report effective file throughput and total elapsed upload time.
Why Cloud Upload Speeds Vary
No cloud storage speed test can guarantee what every user will experience. Upload speed is affected by several variables, including:
Your internet upload capacity
Many internet plans advertise high download speeds but provide considerably lower upload speeds. A cloud platform cannot consistently upload faster than the connection available to it.
Wi-Fi conditions
Distance from the router, interference, competing devices, and older wireless hardware can reduce actual upload performance. A wired connection will ordinarily provide a more stable benchmarking environment.
Network congestion and routing
Traffic on a local network, an internet service provider’s network, or the route between the user and the platform’s servers may affect transfer speed.
File size and file count
Uploading one large archive may behave differently from uploading thousands of small files. Each file can require its own request, metadata, and processing steps.
Platform architecture
Cloud platforms do not necessarily handle browser uploads in the same way. Chunking methods, request handling, encryption processes, server locations, and congestion controls can affect performance.
Browser and device performance
Browser version, extensions, processor load, available memory, and background applications may also influence a web-based upload.
For those reasons, the most useful comparison is one that uses the same file, device, browser, and connection—and still recognizes that results may change at another time or location.
Why We Are Publishing a Preliminary Result
Speed claims should be transparent. We are publishing the methodology alongside the numbers so readers can see what was measured, how it was calculated, and what the test does and does not establish.
This initial comparison involved one upload trial per platform. Repeated trials would produce a stronger picture of ordinary performance by showing the median result and the range between faster and slower uploads.
Accordingly, our next expanded cloud storage speed comparison should include:
- Multiple trials for each platform
- Randomized testing order
- More than one test file
- Original-file throughput and end-to-end upload time
- Median, fastest, and slowest results
- Testing at different times or from additional connections
The present result remains useful as a real-world snapshot: under the same test conditions, LockItVault produced the highest measured upload throughput of the four platforms.
